A lot of forums have this feature - where a Moderator can merge two threads of the same topic together, instead of deleting or just closing them. This is often helpful because someone could make a very valid thread, with very valid posts on it, but the only problem being the valid thread had been made before!
Also, its a lot of new members that make duplicate threads and they get put off by their threads being deleted, I've noticed. Merging 'em is a little less harsh.
What do you think?

With this particular forum software, the merge threads feature is not available just yet but when it is, you can be assured that we will have it activated.
I wish there was an easier way of handling duplicates than by closing threads. There's nothing more I think that can be done at the moment other than post guides for newbies and suggest they run a topic search FIRST!. Newbies are the main offenders when they glance down the latest discussions and notice that there isn't a thread on GNR and think they are doing the community a favor by starting one!
Even though it is a small scale problem, I do acknowledge that it's not nice to close a members thread so soon but have to in the larger interests of the community. Too many same topic threads is so not cool.
It is easier for a newbie to read the About to start a topic : READ THIS FIRST sticky than it is for a moderator to close a thread.
However, that being said. If you have a better suggestion to get us over until a merge threads plugin is available, I'd sure like to hear it

Yeah, true! I remember I made a duplicate thread when I first signed up, but I had made the thread before!! I saw it in the Latest Posts section and thought I put it in the wrong place, haha.
Well, another thing to do would be to PM them, explaining why their thread was deleted? Even set up an Email feature, like for new posts or new PMs, that says 'Your thread has been deleted', if thats possible.
So that they dont get so upset, haha.
But, generally you post something explaining why when they get closed anyway.
I'm glad to hear theres a merging feature on the way, though!
