Why do you think Glam lost its popularity?

Grunge seems to be blamed a lot, a singer (I think it might have been Mark Slaughter or Jani Lane, can't remember) said he knew glam metal's days were over when he walked into the record company office and his band's display had been replaced with an Alice In Chains (I think) display - ironic though, as they were pretty much glam to start off with!
Maybe people just got bored, I wasn't there but I get the impression it was getting a bit formulaic and samey towards the end.

It's just the way things go. The music that was popular in the 50's and 60's lost popularity too. Eventually things come back around, but frankly, it's just the way the times change.

checked out.. and i guess like everybody is saying, grunge might have done the trick.. i'm gunna ask my mom cuz she experienced all of that shit!!
~glam baby bearPosted 3 years ago # -
alright, asked my mom and she said that's kinda when boybands started coming in.. and everybody knows those were a big hit... so that might have a big part in the fizzling away of glam rock

Glam never really did lose it'z popularity just because it wasn't in the public eye doesn't mean it wasn't still popular everything just switched to a more underground level some of the big bandz today came from that scene such as Backyard Babies and Hardcore Superstar both of which I saw play to packed houses back in the 90'z. If anything harmed glam in any way shape or form it was the money grabbing record execz and the mass media platforms IE: television, magazines within which these parasites thrive, the independant press championed the glam scene as were considered to be the fallen rebelz who were never actually popular in the first place,if you go right back to the 70'z & 80'z and into the 90'z glam fans have alwayz been oppressed by so called normal society and fanz of other music genres.

All music remains "popular" with the people who are fans of it, regardless of what the charts say is popular. The problem is a lot of people "follow the charts" and listen to whatever is on them. I admit, I don't listen to as many of my old favorites as I used to, but I do still listen to them.
Radio stations are notoriously bad for ignoring the music that has "fallen out of fashion." If it's not on the charts, a lot of stations won't play it. But the fact remains, it appears that various types of music have lost their popularity when in fact, they're just not being "focused" on in the charts.

Cheers guys! It is true that it just moved underground. There are many people who never stopped listening to it.

look as long as there are websites like this glam is never goning to lose. the reason i think not many people have heard of glam is because of the emo movement and people stated listening to this instead of good music

Glam i think lost its mainstream popularity cuz it was over 10 yrs old and everyone was jsut copying eachother, noone was doing anything different then grunge came and it was different and people just got into that, but i think now more than ever 80s is coming back hardcore! It was the funnest times out of all music history and i think with all the shit thats happened lately everyones ready to just fuking have fun again! Or at least i am !! haha

Heres hoping Motley!!
I can't stand much more of this sh*t they call music these days!! In 20 years I wonder what they will call mainstream music from today..."The Bland Era"? LOLPosted 3 years ago # -
i think its because grunge pretty much took over the music industry...nirvana/kurt cobain had ALOT to do with glam lost its "shine" if you will...because i know alot of people were awww stuck buy the impact of grunge...but hey...some of the 80's bands ars still kickin..def leppard are still putting out killer tunes so arent acdc and motley crue and krokus put out a fuckin killer album a few years ago...dont worry guys glam may not be AS popular as it ws back in our dy but i know damn well it aint gonna totally die out...not as long as were around right ?

Because people started getting into shitty music only because it sounded like something new.

People discovered Thrash...
Posted 3 years ago # -
I've got to agree mostly with Motleyrattfan23, but hairmetalharlot has it more right than people remember. Thrash is what got glam-metal bands embarrassed to be glam, at least until Poison came along. Apparently the L.A. scene can be divided into phases, like this:
1. Everyone Tries To Be A Cross Between Motley Crue And Van Halen
2. Everyone Tries To Be Poison
3. Everyone Tries To Be Guns 'n Roses And Shows Off Their "New 'Street' Look
4. Some Bands Try To Be Jane's Addiction (why does no one think of them?), Some Keep Hoeing The G'n'R Row
5. Dissolution? (Apparently the local scene lasted years longer than most people think; I remember being there in '94 and there were still plenty of hair-metal bands on the local scene, and even a "theatrical" glam-metal band or two. I have no idea what it's like now, but AFAIK there are still a lot of G'n'R wannabes in the L.A. scene, because, well, that's what you do when you're a rawk band in L.A.)Of course, it's a lot more complex than that, but those are apparently the important themes. And obviously there's the important phase before all this, when you've got Motley Crüe and Ratt and Dokken and whoever developing their sounds (and of course the mighty Van Halen before them), but it seems that it was when those bands took off ('83 or so) that The Scene As We Knew It developed. No one seemed to be thinking in terms of a musical tradition that deserved to be carried forward; to the extent people were even thinking about it instead of just hitting the big time with their own bands, they seemed to want to preserve the scene in amber, warts and all, instead, and that's a formula for disaster in the long term.
In short, no one could see that there was anything wrong (except possibly as it affected any given band's shot at the big time), and that's exactly what was wrong. As I've said before, the fact that almost everyone not already a Big Rock Star eventually abandoned it in favor of grunge tells people they didn't really believe in it. That may be wrong, but that's what it looks like to lots of people.
After such a long time doing the same thing, some people might want a change, even if (begging the question) the music's not as good. Of course, what happens when that wears off is another matter.
BTW, @Techwreckie: It was Jani.
