I think as soon as you appear with facial hair, that disqualifies you from consideration as glam.

Same as when Andy Scott wore a beard on Love Is Like Oxygen, while at that stage they were in their death throes, they weren't glam like the glam of their Blockbuster days.

I say, facial hair is most unglam. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Please allow me to explain in a factual way.

    * This site is for promoting GLAM.
    * Hair bands are fundamentally the same as Glam Metal but may have a more higher pitched vocal to them.
    * Hair bands are not Southern Country Rocks bands.
    * Hair bands don't have a strings section.
    * Facial hair is not GLAM. No GLAM/HAIR METAL bands have beards, goatees nor moustaches.

The title of this thread indeed says "hair bands". If you look at the direction that aXemAn took this thread, for the uninitiated, hair bands and hair metal bands are one of the same.

Please don't take to mean hair bands as anyone that has long hair.

metalrulesall : There is no need for that sort of attitude.

    Consider this a warning.

P.S. Queen & Aerosmith WERE glam bands during the 70s. Your observation while correct, was put in an inflammatory way.

We're here to help each other an to share. Not to put anyone down for trying. That won't be tolerated. Please don't do it again.

i very much apoligize for my attitude my reason being for that was because u called aerosmith and queen "hair bands" and like u said during the 70's they "were" glam but you need to realize that glam and hair metal while there alot similar they are to seperate genres ....just thought i would point that out to you for future reference..p.s....i once again apoligize for my rude behaviour

Hey metalrulesall : Thanks, you are a real stand up guy.

Just for some perspective, the member that you insulted, (if you click to see the profile) is a girl and as you know, chicks don't take insults very well and get upset quickly. If you cuss at me, I'd probably like you better. That's the difference between chicks and guys my friend.

Now you raise an issue that I would like to comment on. I agree with you, 70s was the original Glam. It was pop music. In the 80s, it became known as Glam metal but it wasn't until the 90s that Hair metal came into use.

Hair Metal-Hair Bands in my understanding are at the more metal, less commercial end of 80s glam and were characterized by a higher pitched vocal. W.A.S.P., Slaughter, Helix & even Britney Fox come to mind.

I don't consider Bon Jovi and not even Poison to fit the mold of the hair band. These guys sold gazillions of records and were fundamentally an evolution of 70s glam in the poppiest sense. That's why I think they fit into the glam spot.

However, whatever category they fall into, discussion around them is most welcomed around here.

    Rock on

Okay here's my take on all this. To my knowledge (and having lived it as a musician) The term hair band, or hair metal wasn't around until the early 90's when glam rock was in its commercial death throes during the advent of grunge and the like. The term was initially used derogatorily by the fans of Grunge, and it referred to the amount of hairspray & teasing of the hair that was characteristic of most of the bands in the genre. It came about because by the time grunge had set in, people had either cut or shaved their heads, or just didn't bother to shower at all. The term however, soon developed into an alternatively accepted name for Glam Metal & Glam Rock of the 80's.

The term does not include bands from the 70's. (although some bands from the 70's did adopt the glam 'big hair' image to gain commercial acceptance when it was trendy to do so, such as Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, David Coverdale's Whitesnake and KISS [when they unmasked](notice I said 'unmasked' and not 'took the make up off' because they never took the make up off.

Glamster, it doesn't have to do with the "less commercial end of 80s glam and were characterized by a higher pitched vocal". And I must disagree with your not including Bon Jovi & Poison as I believe them (along with Motley Crue & Def Leppard)would have been the absolute prime targets of the Grunge supporters when they coined the phrase 'hair band' as an insult to them due to there massive commercial success.

The term 'hair' does not refer simply to bands who 'had hair'(sorry Cindy), so no way could you include ELO, Queen, or Skyns...

I hope this helps to clear things up a little. I'd appreciate comments...

To continue from my first post, I thought I would include this list. Not my personal favorites, but what in my opinion might be close to being a 'definitive' list of hair bands, due to their commercial successes & image which I'm sure was what the original grunge detractors were focusing on and also so it might assist others in what type of band to include under the genre... Obviously there are a lot more, so again this is my opinion only...

    1. POISON
    2. MOTLEY CRUE
    3. DEF LEPPARD
    4. WARRANT
    5. CINDERELLA
    6. RATT
    7. BON JOVI

i don't take kindly to issues of my gender being conversed about as to getting upset...just to state that.

    i'm no magical fantastical expert on hair bands...especially the names...my main area is 70s glam...but i'll do my best....(probably ad-lib-ing from yours...sorry.)

in no particular order i have:

    1.Whitesnake.
    2.Bon Jovi.
3.Motley Crue...(which reminds me...i want to check my input is still on).
    4.Def Leppard.
    5.Poison.
    6.Joan Jett.
    7.Lynyrd Skynyrd.
    8.Kiss.
    9.Ozzy.
    10.Guns N Roses.

what do you know...i made it to 10.

PS- *she says quietly so as not to cause any arguments*...Sweet themselves did say that they were well out of Glam by 1978 (when Andy grew his beard)....in fact there "run" with glam ended at Fox On The Run....speaking of facial hair..Steve also grew a moustache...

i admit i preferred Sweet in glam mode...but i have such a wide interest in music that i liked some of the later styles also....i also believe that their last album 'Identity Crisis' was written about me....even though it was released 7 years before i was born.
