Do you like these new groups who are imitating the glam artists we grew up on? Primary group that comes to mind would be "The Darkness"

I have to admit, I kinda like a few of their songs and it does bring back alittle nostalgia for me when I see their videos.

Not a good name "The Darkness" for a glam group.
I don't know about new glam groups.
Guess I'd better stay on top of things.

I think The Darkness is pretty good. Other current bands that sound like 80s glam bands include The Poodles, Crashdiet, Dirty Penny, Wig Wam, and Wild Frontier. They all have some great material that would have been popular 20 years ago! I especially like The Poodles - Metal Will Stand Tall album.

Mr2600, thanks for the heads up. I'll go to the mall later to check out if they have the Poodles - Metal Will Stand Tall.

Talking about new glam had peaked my interest in hearing some of it.

    Thanks for the information.

Hey this is a great thread!
I am a *HUGE* fan of The Darkness & Wig Wam, but I've never even heard of the other bands?!?

Like you said,Cindy, "I guess I better stay on top of things."

Is any of those other bands material available for download?

There's a band from Australia called The Deadthings - They're staying reasonably true to their glam roots.

I know you can download The Poodles, Dirty Penny, Wig Wam, and Wild Frontier from iTunes. Along with The Poodles, the Wild Frontier album is also really good. I like Dirty Penny and Wig Wam but not quite as much as the other two bands.

If you haven't listened to these you should also checkout...

Starbreaker - Starbreaker (this whole album is incredible)
    Gotthard - Domino Effect
    Hurricane Party - Get This
Pink Cream 69 - Thunderdome (the second best album from this list after Starbreaker)
Pretty Maids - Wake Up to the Real World (80s band with a solid new album)
TMG - TMG I (Eric Martin from Mr. Big is the lead singer)

the best songs from these albums (IMO) are...
Starbreaker - Break My Bones, Crushed, Days of Confusion
Gotthard - The Cruiser, Now, Domino Effect
Hurricane Party - Crown of Thorns, Roadstar
Pink Cream 69 - Carnaby Road, Here I Am, Another Wrong Makes a Right
Pretty Maids - Another Shot of Your Love, As Guilty as You
    TMG - Trapped, Never Goodbye

I also really like Damone - Out Here All Night but I consider them to be more 'glamfluenced' then actual glam. Check out "Out Here All Night" and "What We Came Here For" as well as a cool acoustic cover of "Wasted Years".

LOL... Andi from Helloween did some glam albums?

I knew he was in Pink Cream 69, but I never heard any of their songs before.

Maybe i'll have to check them out now, and see what I think of them.

Anyway, I really like the Darkness actually. Sure they may be goofy and border-line Spinal Tap, but the music is catchy as hell!

I keep hearing the name "The Darkness" being thrown around.
I'll have to check this band out.

If you check out Pink Cream 69 listen to the album "Thunderdome". It's the best of the 3 albums from them that I have.

I like The Darkness a lot now but I wasn't a big fan when I first heard them. Their music took awhile to grow on me. Most of the songs are sung in a very high falsetto.

That in and out falsetto is very much part of the signature Darkness sound. I think they broke up didn't they and aren't gigging anymore?

The Darkness has a 70s side both in their image and in their riffing. It's these things that makes them unique. They are nothing like the 80s glam bands. They are closer to Sweet & Slade than they are to Bon Jovi, Poison or Guns N'Roses.

Out of the recent groups to imitate the glam era "The Darkness" and "The Poodles" are my favorite. I do have to admit though, it takes some time for these groups to grow on me, it's not instant love like I had with the original glam groups.

Also this isn't a new group, but does anyone remember Mother Love Bone from the late 80's/early 90's? Most of the members later went on to form Pearl Jam, but Mother Love Bone was heavily influenced by Glam.

Unfortunately their singer died an early death due to drugs, and then Pearl Jam was formed.

StillRocking, Gee that's an interesting piece of information. Thanks for sharing.

Personally, I can't stand Pearl Jam and had to endure them in concert because my boss at the time was a big Pearl Jam head, took out a corporate box and took all his staff. If you didn't go, you would have been labelled a "non team player". What a fucking boring show it was.

I feel better about the whole thing now knowing that they had their roots in glam.

I have to admit I haven't been listening to any new glam stuff. At least it's nice to know I'm not alone in that. :)

Guess I'll have to check into it. Maybe take back control of my radio.

I don't know the darkness, its sounds familiar, but I cant place it right now. I think Glam is the same for most anything, either you have it or you don't, that simple. And when you have it, its true, and the people listening and/or watching, can feel it through what you play, how you sing and how you over all act. If its not there, then I'm not going to pay any attention to it. I don't have the time to spare to be around fake stuff. :)

    PS Murray - great pic!

I don't like Pearl Jam either, but Mother Love Bone was awesome.

Also, speaking of glam influenced Grunge music...early Alice In Chains had some strong glam influences. For a look at this, listen to Facelift. About half the songs could almost pass as straight-up Glam.

This is just my opinion because I can't hear glam but, probably 90% of glam is visual. For example, a bunch of guys with either shaved heads or goatees or both, standing there in jeans and black tees.....playing Ratt's "I Want A Woman", I wouldn't think of as glam.

While I acknowledge that there are some aspects to the songwriting / performance of the music that are identifiable with Glam....i.e., vocals hitting big notes, the one bar pause them kaboom, multiple octave high vocal screams and layered vocal harmonies. Not alot and most of these musical devices are used across genres.

Visually though, the hair, the costumes, makeup, drummers spinning sticks / exaggerated movements, posing guitarists, frontmen doing tricks with mikes and mikestands.

It's just my observation. Maybe you hearing something that I haven't yet and if you do, please come back to let me know about it.
