First off, I just want to let it be known that I'm a die-hard Lynch era Dokken fan. I truly believe that George Lynch is one of the most gifted and talented guitarists of his era. Now, saying that, it is quite clear that I would have high expectations when Dokken said they are returning to their "classic" 80's style sound. I know that several bands say that they are going to return to their classic style, but in the end, it doesn't turn out that way. But in Dokken's case, with "Lightning Strikes Again", that couldn't be more true!
The current Dokken lineup only features 2 of the 4 members that made them famous in the 80's..."Wild" Mick Brown on drums, and of course, Don Dokken on vocals. But the other members; guitarist Jon Levin, and bassist Barry Sparks really do a good job in re-creating that classic Dokken sound. "Lightning Strikes Again" is filled with the riffs and songs that Dokken fans have to to know and love. It's starts off with the rockin' single, "Standing on the Outside" and never lets up.
Now, I still don't believe anyone could truly replace Lynch, but I have to give credit where credit is due. Jon Levin is a very talented guitarist in his own right, and should get more recognition for his work. Like many have said, Don's voice may not be where it was during the "Under Lock and Key" era, but he still has a strong performance. The two "ballads" on the album, "How I Miss Your Smile", and "I Remember" are well written, and performed with a lot of passion.
If I had to narrow down the biggest highlights of the album, I would say; the opener Standing On The Outside, This Fire, Oasis, Heart to Stone, and Point Of No Return. But I honestly don't skip over any songs on it. I also really love the before mentioned, "How I Miss Your Smile" as well.
So all in all, this is a fantastic return for Dokken. "Lightning Strikes Again" is in the running for my top album of the year, but I have yet to decide that. If you love 80's era Dokken, and killer guitar riffs, this is a must-have for your collection! It's nice to know that bands like Dokken are staying true to who they are and to their fans. But as good as it is, I am still crossing my fingers for a full-blown Dokken reunion with Lynch and Pilson! Hey, my dream might be closer to a reality than some might think...
